Slate roofing is one of the older, more historic roofing materials that was used hundreds of years ago. With the increases in technology regarding durability and aesthetics, slate was overtaken by shingles, composite roofing, and metal when it relates to popularity. Although slate has a much longer lifespan than asphalt shingles, it tends to fade, requires some maintenance, and can become brittle/weak as the years progress. Repairs on slate roofs are an extreme pain and are very costly to homeowners.
